Bruins’ loss is especially painful for the defense

The aftermath of UCLA’s 35-7 loss to California on Saturday was felt in the training room.

Freshman cornerback Anthony Jefferson was lost for the season, as he will have surgery on his left foot after suffering a dislocation in the joint mid-foot. Freshman defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa and sophomore cornerback Sheldon Price will have MRI exams Monday. Odighizuwa has what was called a strained right shoulder and Price a right knee injury.

“We just want to see if there is any structural damage,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said.

Quarterback question

Neuheisel was not ready to commit to Kevin Prince starting at quarterback against Oregon on Oct. 21.

Prince completed 13 of 31 passes for 99 yards, with one touchdown pass and one interception, against Cal before Richard Brehaut took over in the fourth quarter. Neuheisel was quick to point out that the pass protection and the effort from receivers were both lacking.

“I haven’t made a decision on who the starting quarterback will be,” Neuheisel said. “I gave the coaches the day off and I want to go through the film verse by verse with the offensive coaches. I want to see competition in practice.”
