Mike Trout’s grand slam leads Angels’ 15-3 exhibition win

ANGELS 15, CUBS 3

AT THE PLATE: The Angels batted around twice in the first four innings. Mike Trout hit a grand slam, singled, and drove in five runs. “Mike’s got such a short swing,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “You wouldn’t think it would take him that many at-bats to get where he needs to be. It took him one.” Chris Iannetta homered, doubled and drove in three runs. J.B. Shuck tripled, singled and drove in three runs.

ON THE MOUND: Ace Jered Weaver pitched three scoreless innings, giving up one hit. His fastball was clocked in the 87-mph range, not bad for his first start considering he threw in the 86-88 mph range last season, and his velocity could increase as the spring goes on. Left-handed reliever Brian Moran, acquired after the Rule 5 draft, faced four batters. Three of them were left-handed. The other batter — right-handed Darwin Barney — hit a home run.

EXTRA BASES: Rain is in the forecast Saturday, which could mean pitcher C.J. Wilson throws in the batting cages rather than against the Seattle Mariners. The Angels have lined up their rotation: Weaver, Wilson, Hector Santiago, Garrett Richards and Tyler Skaggs, with Joe Blanton likely to start on split-squad games.

UP NEXT: vs. Seattle on Saturday at noon PST at Peoria, Ariz. On the air: TV: Prime Ticket; Radio: 830.
