Source: Dodgers’ Logan White to interview for GM job with New York Mets

Logan White, Dodgers assistant general manager, will interview for the New York Mets’ vacant general manager’s post, according to a baseball source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussion.

White will be with the Dodgers next season in his present role if he isn’t hired by the Mets. With his current two-year contract set to expire this year, White has reached an agreement with the Dodgers on terms of a new deal.

The job interview will be the second of the year for White, who was also a candidate for the Arizona Diamondbacks position that went to Kevin Towers. White was also interviewed by the Houston Astros in 2007.

A highly regarded talent evaluator, White oversaw the drafts that produced a number of the Dodgers’ core players, including Clayton Kershaw, Jonathan Broxton, Chad Billingsley, Matt Kemp, James Loney and Russell Martin.

White will be the fifth person to be interviewed by the Mets, according to multiple reports. Others under consideration are Sandy Alderson, Rick Hahn, Josh Byrnes and Allard Baird.

Burnett to start for Yankees

Right-hander A.J. Burnett, bumped to the bullpen against Minnesota in the American League division series after finishing the regular season with a 10-15 record, was told by New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi that he’ll get the ball for Game 4 of the AL Championship Series.

Gonzalez to replace Cox

The Atlanta Braves reportedly are hiring Fredi Gonzalez as manager, replacing the retiring Bobby Cox.

According to media reports, including FOX 5 in Atlanta, Gonzalez possibly will take over the Braves as early as Thursday.

Gonzalez spent three-plus seasons as manager of the Florida Marlins before being fired this season. He was the third base coach of the Braves from 2003 to 2006.

The Braves were eliminated from the playoffs by the San Francisco Giants on Monday, ending Cox’s career as manager. He led the Braves to 14 consecutive division titles, five National League championships and one World Series title.

Pirates interview Macha, Banister

Ken Macha and Jeff Banister have interviewed as the Pittsburgh Pirates search for their next manager.

Macha, a Pittsburgh-area native, was fired by the Milwaukee Brewers this month after a 157-167 record in two seasons as manager of the club. He had a 368-280 record from 2003 to 2006 with the Oakland Athletics, which he led to American League West titles in 2003 and 2006.

Banister has been in the Pirates’ organization for 25 years as a player, minor league manager and major league and minor league field coordinator. He finished this season as the Pirates’ bench coach after Gary Varsho was fired.
