Dodgers call up outfielder Scott Schebler, send down Dan Coulombe

Apparently a team can only play with so many outfielders who are nursing various injuries. Or players. The Dodgers currently have three outfielders on the disabled list, so Friday they called up Scott Schebler from triple-A Oklahoma City.

On the shuttle back down was left-handed reliever Dan Coulombe, whom they had called up Tuesday and who pitched 2 1/3 innings against the Cardinals on Thursday. Coulombe has already been up and down three times this season.

Schebler, 24, was the Dodgers’ minor league player of the year in 2013. He was, however, batting only .216 with six homers and 15 RBIs in Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers aren’t wasting any time taking a look at him. He’s in the lineup Friday in left field, making his major league debut, and batting seventh. Joc Pederson is in center and Andre Ethier is in right.

Chris Heisey, also recently called up, Enrique Hernandez and Alex Guerrero are the backup outfielders. The Dodgers played Thursday down a position player, with Howie Kendrick out because of a sore knee.

Although Kendrick said his knee is feeling better, Hernandez will get the start at second base Friday night.
