Dodgers defeat Braves, 3-2, in 10 innings

KEY MOMENT: Matt Kemp singled in the game-winning run in the 10th inning, lifting the Dodgers to their fifth consecutive victory. Kemp had three hits on Wednesday and is batting .486 in his last nine games.

AT THE PLATE: Kemp hit his third home run in two nights. He has 11 this season, tied with Hanley Ramirez for third on the team. Adrian Gonzalez leads with 15; Yasiel Puig has 12. Kemp also twice advanced two bases on an infield single.

ON THE MOUND: Zack Greinke would have joined Adam Wainwright and Max Scherzer as baseball’s only 13-game winners had Kenley Jansen not blown his first save since June 20. Still, Greinke pitched brilliantly, giving up one run and five hits in eight innings and striking out a season-high 13.

TRADE DAY: The signals from the front office indicated the Dodgers would not make a big splash at Thursday’s trade deadline, but at least some of the players are eager to find out. “With the history of our front office, and the way the Dodgers have operated the past few years, they have always done everything they can do to improve our ballclub,” catcher A.J. Ellis said. “I don’t think any of us would be shocked to see a change happen.”

ROSTER NEWS: The Dodgers optioned infielder Darwin Barney, acquired Monday from the Chicago Cubs, to triple-A Albuquerque so he could play shortstop and third base. The Dodgers want Barney to provide defense-first depth at second base, shortstop and third base; he last started a game at shortstop in 2012 and last started a game at third base in 2010. The Dodgers completed the Barney trade Wednesday, sending Class A right-hander Jonathan Martinez to the Cubs.
