Colts cornerback out for year

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Michael Coe will be put on injured reserve and will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee last week.

Colts Coach Tony Dungy had said Coe was likely to miss at least eight weeks and Indianapolis hoped to wait until the two roster cutdowns before making a decision.

The plan changed Tuesday when Dungy announced the Colts couldn’t wait for Coe to return because they needed a roster spot.

The Miami Dolphins cut kicker Jay Feely, one season after he made 21 of 23 field goals. Undrafted rookie Dan Carpenter will take over as the starting kicker.

New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress took the field in pads for the first time since training camp opened late last month. Burress has been sitting out with a sore right ankle.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Florida loses two more for season

Two more Florida players will miss the season after tearing knee ligaments. Gators sophomore offensive lineman Jim Barrie and freshman linebacker Brendan Beal are the fourth and fifth players to tear their anterior cruciate ligaments.

Tight end Cornelius Ingram, who turned down the NFL to return for his senior season, tore his left ACL during Florida’s second day of practice last week. Redshirt junior Dorian Munroe, a projected starter at safety, and senior safety John Curtis, a backup, tore ACLs in July.

Georgia offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant, who started all 13 games as a freshman last season, will have season-ending reconstructive surgery after injuring his left knee in the team’s first preseason scrimmage Monday.

Pittsburgh has lost starting defensive end Doug Fulmer to a knee injury, the third year in a row injuries have ended Fulmer’s season. Fulmer tore a ligament in his left knee and will need surgery.

The NCAA cleared West Virginia defensive lineman Pat Liebig to play this season. Liebig last played in the Gator Bowl after the 2006 season and has 39 career tackles. He sat out the 2007 season, returning home to Florida to run his family business and to care for his ailing father.

Islanders select Gordon as coach

The New York Islanders hired Scott Gordon, the American Hockey League coach of the year, to replace dismissed head coach Ted Nolan. Gordon, 45, guided the Providence Bruins to the second round of the playoffs last season.

Brett Hull, longtime New York Rangers Brian Leetch and Mike Richter, and Cammi Granato, the all-time leading scorer for the U.S. women’s team, were selected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

England’s Donald has wrist surgery

Luke Donald of England underwent surgery on his injured left wrist and will miss the remainder of the 2008 golf season, including next month’s Ryder Cup matches. Donald has lost only once in seven Ryder Cup matches.

Suspended boxer Joey Gilbert agreed to pay a $10,000 fine for a positive steroid test as part of a settlement with the Nevada Athletic Commission that will allow him to return to the ring as soon as Sept. 22. The 31-year-old middleweight from Reno gained international attention on the NBC reality series “The Contender” in 2005.

Kansas City minor league pitcher Victor Jorge and two players in the Arizona organization, pitcher Winfild De La Rosa and first baseman Ramon Mariano, were suspended for 50 games each after testing positive under baseball’s minor league drug program.

Cody Allen Miley, the 17-year-old son of former Cincinnati Reds manager Dave Miley was killed when his car veered off a Tampa (Fla.) roadway and struck a tree, police said.

The Detroit Shock acquired six-time All-Star Taj McWilliams-Franklin from the Washington Mystics for forwards Tasha Humphrey and Shay Murphy and a 2009 draft pick.

Mardy Fish, Feliciano Lopez and Marat Safin were the latest seeded players to lose in the first round of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington.

Alejandro Falla beat the fifth-seeded Fish, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, and qualifier Robert Kendrick defeated the third-seeded Lopez, 6-3, 7-5. Safin, seeded sixth, retired from his match with Fabio Fognini after losing the first set, 7-5. Safin said he pulled a muscle in his neck during the second point of the match. Top-seeded Andy Roddick defeated Ramon Delgado, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Luciano Emilio scored twice to lead D.C. United to a 3-1 victory over defending champion New England Revolution in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup in Washington. D.C. United will host the Sept. 3 final against the Charleston Battery, a team from the second-tier United Soccer Leagues First Division.
