Brittney Griner files to annul marriage to Glory Johnson-Griner

Brittney Griner announced Friday that she had filed for an annulment of her marriage to Glory Johnson-Griner less than a month after the two WNBA players exchanged wedding vows.

The announcement also comes one day after Johnson-Griner revealed she is pregnant.

“Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage,” Griner said in a statement. “I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.”

Johnson-Griner’s agent said in a statement that she was “extremely hurt and blindsided” by Griner’s decision to seek an annulment.

“She loves Brittney and made a huge sacrifice to carry a child, put her career on hold, invest in their relationship and their future,” D.J. Fisher said.

The two were married on May 8, two weeks after they allegedly got into a fight at their home in Phoenix and were arrested on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct charges.

Griner later pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and will attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling under the terms of a diversion agreement reached with the Goodyear, Ariz., court. All charges against Griner will be dismissed if she completes the counseling program. Johnson-Griner’s case is still pending.

Each player publicly apologized on social media in the days after the incident. A week before their wedding, Johnson-Griner posted a photo of herself and Griner smiling on Instagram with a caption stating they were moving on from the incident.

“We know we must set better examples, even during the most trying times, and we are EXTREMELY sorry for all the negative attention we brought to ourselves, our family, and the league. We are actively seeking help in order to do BETTER.”

Last month, WNBA President Laurel J. Richie suspended both players for the first seven games of the season. Johnson-Griner, a two-time All-Star with the Tulsa Shock, announced Thursday she is pregnant and would sit out the entire 2015 season. As a result, her suspension will carry over in 2016.

Griner is eligible to make her season debut for the Phoenix Mercury on June 27 against the Minnesota Lynx.

Before Griner’s announcement, Johnson-Griner posted a message to Instagram on Friday that included a photo of Griner: “One day until I’m reunited with my Wife @brittneygriner.... This is about to be one CRAZY SUMMER!!!”

Griner, the reigning WNBA defensive player of the year, played a key role in helping the Phoenix Mercury capture last season’s WNBA title. She finished second on the team in scoring behind Diana Taurasi, averaging 15.6 points and eight rebounds per game.

Johnson-Griner averaged 14.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game last season for Tulsa.
