More like sibling revelry as NBA All-Stars Pau and Marc Gasol face off

Advantage: Older brother.

The Gasol vs. Gasol story line ended in slight favor of Pau, who had 10 points and 12 rebounds while Marc had six points and 10 rebounds Sunday.

They were the first brothers to start an NBA All-Star game; Sunday’s exhibition was won by Marc’s Western Conference team, 163-158.

They were asked the same questions for several days, derivations of who would beat whom when they played as kids.

To which Pau replied earlier in the weekend, “As I’ve said, sometimes he wins, sometimes I win. We’re both very talented players.”

Pau’s season with the Chicago Bulls couldn’t be much better after a pair of understated ones to finish his career with the Lakers. He is on a string of 14 consecutive double-doubles, one behind Michael Jordan’s franchise-record streak in 1988-89.

Sunday was all entertainment, though, as usual for an All-Star game. Pau also beat Marc in the opening tip-off.

“Just to see them jumping against each other and to think about them growing up in Spain,” West Coach Steve Kerr said. “Who would have guessed that one day they would have jumped center at the All-Star game in Madison Square Garden? So that was a special moment.

“They are both spectacular players. Two of my favorite players in the league.”

Passing Paul

First Kobe Bryant’s season ended with shoulder surgery. Then Blake Griffin underwent a procedure on his elbow because of a staph infection.

It left Chris Paul as the only representative of the Lakers or Clippers in Sunday’s game.

He was a distributor all the way, leading all players with 15 assists. The next-closest were James Harden and Kyle Lowry, each with eight assists.

Paul also had 12 points, making six of 13 shots.

Freezing-cold vacation

Mychal Thompson could have stayed home in sunny Southern California, enjoying eight days off between games as the Lakers’ radio analyst. Instead he chose single-digit temperatures for four days here.

Crazy? Nah. A devoted dad.

Thompson had a solid NBA career but now is known outside of Los Angeles as Klay Thompson’s father. The Golden State guard had seven points in his first All-Star game after finishing third in Saturday’s three-point shooting contest.

“When you’re young like this, it’s so fresh and new for these guys. What a great experience,” Mychal said. “Guys like [Tim] Duncan and Kobe have done this 100 times. They sort of yawn at it.”

Mychal was the first overall pick in 1978 and later won two championships as a Lakers reserve but never played in an All-Star game.

“They kept taking some other stiffs ahead of me: Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar], Moses [Malone], Artis Gilmore and Bob Lanier,” he said jokingly. “How unjustified was it for me to be overlooked for those guys?”
