Quarterback T.J. Millweard to transfer from UCLA
UCLA got a little thinner at quarterback Monday.
T.J. Millweard met with Coach Jim Mora and asked to be released from his scholarship so he could transfer. The request was granted. The Bruins now have three quarterbacks on scholarship: starter Brett Hundley, redshirt freshman Jerry Neuheisel and freshman Asiantii Woulard.
“They are the right three,” Mora said. “I’d rather have the right three than the wrong five.”
Millweard said he decided to leave because “I grew up in the Midwest and the South. Coach Mora is a great coach. UCLA is a great school. But it is a different fit for who I am.”
Millweard, who played at Fort Worth All Saints High, said he talked with Mora in the spring about transferring.
“He asked me to give it a chance through training camp,” said Millweard, who sat out as a redshirt in 2012. “But this was a different college experience than I wanted it to be.
“I’ll start looking at colleges tomorrow and set up some visits. Hopefully, I’ll be able to find a spot that will give me the college experience I want.”
Millweard will have to sit out this season, but he will have three years of eligibility remaining.
The Bruins’ depth concerns are minimal, Mora said.
Hundley is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the Pac-12 Conference. Neuheisel has spent 11/2 years in the program. Woulard has already displayed skills.
UCLA also has walk-on Mike Fafaul and will bring in Jake Hall. (Teams are limited in the number of players who can practice before school starts.) Walk-on Brendan Cross, who has been working at receiver, can also play quarterback.
“At most places, if your starter goes down you’re in some trouble,” Mora said. “I think if our starter goes down, Jerry would do a heck of a job for us. “
Line concerns
Simon Goines, the Bruins’ starting left tackle, continues to nurse a sore right knee. He hyperextended the knee Thursday and has been held out of team and individual drills since.
“I thought Simon would be back today,” Mora said. “Hopefully, back here tomorrow. He needs to get back out here.”
Guard Ben Wysocki and tackle Poasi Moala, who were out because of concussions, returned to full-contact drills. Guard Alex Redmond, who has a concussion, worked on the side and could be back Tuesday.
Quick hit
Defensive end Ian Taubler, who has a concussion, might sit out the season, Mora said.
