Update: One of the most anticipated games of the Major League Soccer season could fizzle if New York City FC’s Frank Lampard is once again unable to play. The former Chelsea legend, who is dealing with a quad strain, has started only once in his first MLS season. But the league, which has drawn an international TV audience for this game, has made it clear it would be disappointed if Lampard didn’t at least make an appearance against the Galaxy and former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The Galaxy, which entered Saturday atop the Western Conference standings, has won five of its last six games while NYCFC, currently outside the playoff zone, has won once in its last four tries. Plus the Galaxy, which will be playing before a sellout crowd, is 10-1-2 at home. Much of the team’s recent success stems from the play of Robbie Keane, Giovani dos Santos and Gerrard. Keane had multiple goals in three of his last six MLS matches, Dos Santos has registered a goal or an assist in his first four games against all competition, and Gerrard has gone a total of 90 minutes in the midfield in his last three MLS games.
