2018 Winter Olympic officials want to keep all events in South Korea

Olympic officials in South Korea have moved to quash speculation that some of the events for their 2018 Winter Games will be held in another country.

“We will study the options once we receive more detailed information from the IOC, but for now it is our wish to have all events staged in PyeongChang, Gangneung and Jeongseon as per our original bid plan accepted by the IOC,” Cho Yang Ho, president of the organizing committee, said in a news release on Friday.

Reuters and the Associated Press reported last week that organizers and the International Olympic Committee had discussed cutting costs by moving bobsled, luge and skeleton to an existing venue in Japan, Europe or North America.

Then, last week, the IOC passed its Olympic 2020 Agenda, part of which allowed for events to be spread across more than one city or country.

Cho said “it will be difficult to apply those recommendations to our plans at this stage, given that construction for all competition venues is already in progress.”
