Angels add Gary DiSarcina, Tim Huff as special assistants

The Angels have promoted former shortstop Gary DiSarcina from minor league field coordinator to special assistant to General Manager Jerry Dipoto and hired former Tampa Bay Rays national cross-checker Tim Huff as a special assistant to the GM.

Dipoto said DiSarcina, who played for the Angels from 1990 to 2000, will be responsible for infield coordination throughout the system and will have a more prominent voice in major league roster decisions and planning.

Huff, a former minor league pitcher in the Toronto organization, will focus on amateur, professional and international pitching “and will impact us in a lot of positive ways,” Dipoto said.

Mike Micucci, who served as manager for double-A Arkansas last season, will replace DiSarcina as minor league field coordinator. Dipoto is also in the process of interviewing candidates to replace international scouting supervisor Marc Russo, whose contract is not being renewed.

Former big league pitcher Jim Gott has been promoted from pitching coach for the Angels’ rookie-league affiliate in Arizona to minor league pitching coordinator. He will replace Kernan Ronan, who will remain with the organization as the rehab pitching coordinator, a newly created position in which he will oversee pitchers coming back from injury.

The Angels have also hired Chad Hermansen, an outfielder who was a first-round pick in 1995 and played six seasons in the big leagues, as an amateur scout covering Nevada, Utah and Colorado.
