Ryan Madson’s rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery was placed on a slower track Wednesday, the Angels scrapping plans to activate him this weekend in favor of sending the right-hander to triple-A Salt Lake for “a couple of weeks,” Madson said.

“I feel ready, I feel I can get major league hitters out,” said Madson, who has had several setbacks since Feb. 1. “But they don’t want me going out too early and getting hurt, and I totally respect that. It shows they care.”

Madson, who threw a scoreless inning for Class A Inland Empire on Monday night, will report Thursday to Salt Lake, where his appearances can be more controlled than they would be in Anaheim.

“He has enough stuff to pitch in the major leagues -- now he needs to fine-tune some things like command, pitching with guys on base, and we need to see how he bounces back,” Manager Mike Scioscia said.

“I don’t know if it will take a couple weeks. It might, it might not. We want to make sure he’s ready to go and that this rehab sticks.”
