Celtics’ Rajon Rondo breaks hand in fall at home, out six to eight weeks
Celtics guard Rajon Rondo will miss the start of Boston’s season after undergoing surgery Friday to repair a broken left hand.
Rondo broke his hand in a fall at home Thursday night and is now expected to be out six to eight weeks.
First-round draft pick Marcus Smart out of Oklahoma State and second-year pro Phil Pressey, who started 11 games as a rookie, are projected to split the starting duties going into the season.
The Celtics open the preseason on Oct. 6 against the Philadelphia 76ers. The regular season begins for Boston on Oct. 29 with a game against the Brooklyn Nets.
Rondo, a four-time All-Star, started in all 30 games he appeared in last season for the Celtics after recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in January 2013.
Rondo averaged 11.7 points with 8.4 rebounds and had 13 double doubles in his shortened 2013-14 campaign. The Celtics failed to reach the playoffs last year after reaching the postseason for six consecutive seasons and winning an NBA title in 2007-08.
Rondo is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2014-15 season.
