Chivas USA knew it was getting a pretty good prospect when it signed 16-year-old striker Caleb Calvert as a homegrown player.

And now, less than a week after becoming the youngest professional player in franchise history, Calvert is already beginning to rack up the awards, being named the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s U-16 National Player of the Year.

“I feel honored and proud,” said Calvert, the nation’s top age-group scorer with 22 goals in 27 games for the Chivas USA Academy during 2012-13. “My teammates are the ones who helped me get this award and who helped me play at the highest level.

“Personally it means I have achieved something I thought I wouldn’t have accomplished in quite a while,” said Calvert, who was born in Wrightwood.

“Now I want to use this as a steppingstone, move forward and get better.”
