Michael Vick to remain Eagles’ starting quarterback, sources say

Michael Vick did not receive an endorsement from his coach following the Philadelphia Eagles’ third straight loss, 30-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

It apparently took Andy Reid more than 24 hours to decide that Vick will remain his team’s starting quarterback, at least for Monday night’s against the New Orleans Saints.

There has been no official announcement since the Eageles’ headquarters were closed Monday due to Sandy, the massive storm that has lashed the East Coast, but three sources told the Associated Press of Reid’s decision.

Vick, a four-time Pro Bowler, has struggled this season. His passer rating of 78.6 is the lowest of his four years with the Eagles. He threw eight interceptions and lost five fumbles during the first six games before going turnover free against the Falcons.

But he’s not the only one in Philadelphia whose job is in jeopardy. Reid, in his 14th season as head coach, has already been informed by team owner Jeffrey Lurie that another 8-8 finish would be “unacceptable.” The loss to the Falcons dropped the Eagles to 3-4, putting them 2 1/2 games behind the NFC East leading New York Giants.

After the game Sunday, Reid said he would evaluate all his starters. Vick responded that he would support whatever decision his coach made.

Fans have been calling for Vick to be bench in favor of rookie Nick Foles, a third-round pick out of Arizona. Foles was impressive during the preseason but didn’t get much playing time against first-team defenses.
