Gunner Kiel, ex-Notre Dame quarterback, to transfer to Cincinnati
Former Notre Dame quarterback Gunner Kiel, whose decision to transfer was announced by Coach Brian Kelly in March, will become a Cincinnati Bearcat, according to a Cincinnati Enquirer report.
“Cincinnati was the best fit for me because the relationship I have with [quarterbacks] coach [Darin] Hinshaw is like nothing else. He is a great overall person and is someone I know I can get coached by,” Kiel said, according to ESPN. “The group of guys I’m going to be around is second to none. I love where they are heading and the future is bright.”
Kiel was rated by Rivals.com and Scout.com as the country’s No. 1 quarterback at Columbus (Ind.) East High.
His decision to attend Cincinnati is considered a major pickup for Coach Tommy Tuberville, who is taking over the Bearcats program for Butch Jones, who left for Tennessee after last season.
Kiel also visited Ball State and Miami (Ohio) before making his transfer decision.
The quarterback will have to sit out the 2013 season because of the transfer, but still has three years of NCAA eligibility.
Last season, Kiel watched as sophomore Everett Golson helped lead the Fighting Irish to a 12-0 record and an appearance in the Bowl Championship Series title game. Notre Dame lost the game against Alabama, 42-14.
