Defenseman Matt Greene will undergo shoulder surgery and will be out of the Kings’ lineup indefinitely, the club said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon.

Greene, 32, hasn’t played since the Kings’ third game of the season, on Oct. 13. One of the team’s designated alternate captains, Greene had been placed on injured reserve as of Oct. 16 and had been skating recently. However, the decision was made to repair the injury via surgery, which is scheduled for Thursday.

Greene played three games and had no points and eight penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of zero.

The Kings did not call up a defenseman from the minor leagues because they are already carrying seven defenseman and scratch one every game. Derek Forbort appeared to be the spare defenseman for Tuesday’s game against Vancouver at Staples, since he stayed out on the ice for extra work with goaltender Jhonas Enroth and forward Jordan Weal after their teammates had returned to the locker room for meetings.
