Jovan Belcher’s last moments are recounted by Kansas City Star

The Kansas City Star reports that the Kansas City Chiefs had been providing counseling to linebacker Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend before he killed her and committed suicide Saturday.

Kansas City police spokesman Richard Sharp told the Star that the couple had been arguing for months and that the team had been “bending over backward” trying to help them.

Belcher fatally shot 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins at their Kansas City home Saturday before shooting himself in the head at Arrowhead Stadium in front of Head Coach Romeo Crennel.

“I was trying to get him to understand that life is not over,” Crennel told the Star. “He still has a chance and let’s get this worked out.’’

But according to the Star, a distraught Belcher walked away from Crennel and knelt down behind a vehicle, making the sign of the cross before shooting himself in the head.

Sharp says Belcher killed himself because he was in misery over shooting his girlfriend.

“He cared about her,” Sharp said. “I don’t think he could live with himself.”

You can read the entire gripping account of the final moments before Belcher shot himself on the Kansas City Star’s website.
