Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence early Tuesday morning after police say they spotted him traveling at a high speed and weaving on a Baltimore roadway.

A Maryland Transportation Authority officer observed Phelps going 84 mph in a 45-mph zone and crossing double lane lines inside the Ft. McHenry Tunnel at 1:40 a.m. EDT, police said in a statement.

When pulled over in his white Land Rover, the 22-time Olympic medalist was cooperative but “unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests,” the statement said.

Phelps later apologized for his arrest on his Twitter account.

In 2004, Phelps was sentenced to 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to drunken driving, also in Maryland. He also came under scrutiny in 2009 after the publication of a photograph that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

The most-decorated swimmer in Olympic history is in the midst of a comeback from retirement and is expected to try for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
