The Ryder Cup, which usually alternates between the United States and the United Kingdom, is taking on a more continental flavor.

With the prestigious America vs. Europe match already scheduled to visit France in 2018, officials announced Monday that it will be played in Italy for the first time in 2022.

The Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome was chosen over rival bids from Germany, Spain and Austria.

“There is no question that the Eternal City of Rome will provide a wonderful backdrop for one of the great occasions in world golf,” said Keith Pelley, chief executive of the European Tour.

The selection of Marco Simone could eventually play a role in Rome’s bid for the 2024 Summer Games because golf has been added to the Olympic program. The Jim Fazio-designed course will undergo a complete makeover.

“The Italian bid was consistently strong and impressive across the board in terms of infrastructure, commercial structure and government support,” said Richard Hills, the Europe Ryder Cup director. “The plans outlined for the golf course at Marco Simone are spectacular alongside the commitment to develop all levels of golf in Italy.”

The next two American clubs to host the Cup will be Hazeltine National in Minnesota in 2016 and Whistling Straits in Wisconsin in 2020.
