Candidates need plan to shore up Social Security: Editorial

With their faceoff at the polls still almost a year away, two congressmen seeking the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Florida have been trying to outdo each other as cheerleaders for Social Security. Alan Grayson, D-Orlando, has called for increasing Social Security benefits and accused rival Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, of wanting to cut the program. Murphy, for his part, has promised to oppose any efforts to reduce its benefits. This is smart politics, especially in Florida. More than 4 million Floridians collect benefits under the popular program, which marked its 80th anniversary last month.
