Angels acquire backup catcher Drew Butera from Dodgers

The Angels added more catching depth on Tuesday when they acquired veteran Drew Butera from the Dodgers for a player to be named or cash. Butera, 31, was designated for assignment after the Dodgers claimed catcher Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Boston Red Sox last week. Butera will compete with Carlos Perez and Jett Bandy for the backup catching job behind starter Chris Iannetta. Known more for his strong arm — he has pitched 1 2/3 big league innings, his fastball touching 94 mph — than his bat, Butera hit .188 (32 for 170) with three homers and 14 RBIs in 61 games for the Dodgers this past season.
