But Czechoslovakia had lost earlier to France. And Henri Leconte’s 6-2, 6-4 win over Mats Wilander gave the French a 1-0 lead over Sweden, putting them within one victory of the final.

The U.S. team, comprised of John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, has already beaten Australia and Spain, and plays winless West Germany today.
