McEnroe, Evert Lloyd Advance
John McEnroe, the No. 1 men’s seed, and Chris Evert Lloyd, co-seeded No. 1 among the women, breezed to straight-set victories today in the Wimbledon tennis championships, while two women’s seeds were upset.
Australia’s Elizabeth Smylie shocked third-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia and Pascale Paradis of France upset No. 14 Wendy Turnbull of Australia to advance into the fourth round. McEnroe, playing on an outside court for the first time since 1979, rolled past South Africa’s Christo Steyn 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, and Lloyd eliminated Australia’s Jenny Byrne 6-2, 6-1.
