A woman was killed and 11 other family members, six of them children, were injured when a speeding boat piloted by a 16-year-old girl crashed into a smaller boat on Lake Millerton at a state park 15 miles northeast of Fresno, authorities said. The two girls and two men in the speedboat were not seriously injured, said Bill Berry, supervising ranger at the state park. One of the injured, a child who suffered a severe spinal injury, was flown to a Fresno hospital by helicopter. Berry said the accident occurred as the girl was driving her boat on the lake, where winds of 30 m.p.h. had kicked up two-foot waves. The girl lost control of the craft, Berry said, and it bumped the rear of the smaller boat. Names of the victims were not released.
