Far West Roundup : Weiss Runs for 172 Yards, and Air Force Wins, 59-17

Senior quarterback Bart Weiss ran for 172 yards and three touchdowns Saturday, guiding Air Force to a 59-17 rout over Rice at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Weiss, who also passed for 97 yards while playing only three quarters, sparked the Falcons to their third victory this season and sixth straight over two seasons.

Rice suffered its second loss of the year and 11th in a row, the nation’s longest losing streak.

Air Force, which amassed 503 yards total offense, had 463 yards after three quarters before reserves took over.

Weiss scored with the game two minutes old on a 10-yard run. He added a six-yard touchdown run in the second period and ran 14 yards for a score in the third quarter.

Kelly Pittman added a pair of touchdowns for the Air Force on a seven-yard run in the first quarter and a three-yard run in the third quarter.

Safety Scott Thomas returned a punt 73 yards on the final play of the half, and reserve fullbacks Grant Morris and Pat Evans scored the other two Air Force touchdowns.

Utah St. 35, San Jose St. 32--Dene Garner kicked a school-record five field goals, including the game winner from 58 yards out with 2:20 left, for Utah State in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Logan, Utah.

The five field goals tied a PCAA record for a single game and gives Garner 10 straight three-pointers in three games this season.

Utah State is 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the PCAA. San Jose State is 1-3 overall, 1-1 in the conference.

Utah State’s Brad Ipsen hit 21 of 41 attempts for 267 yards and one score.
