Orange : Suspect Arrested After Jewelry Store Robbery

Share

Brandishing a five-inch steak knife, a lone robber took diamonds valued at $2,400 from Weisfield’s Jewelers, but he didn’t get to keep them long.

Security guards from The City Mall gave chase and stopped Jimmy Dan King, 29, of Norwalk in a nearby parking lot. They recovered the diamonds and the knife, police said, and King was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery.

Police Lt. Bob Gustafson gave this account: About 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, a man entered Weisfield’s, displayed a five-inch steak knife, and demanded cash and merchandise from the two sales clerks.

They gave him diamonds and the bandit left without incident, Gustafson said. The robber then fled, but as he emerged from the store, Windsor Security guard Chuck Algrill ran after him.

Algrill had overheard a clerk calling for help, Gustafson said, and chased the man out the south doors of the mall. Three other Windsor guards joined the pursuit and they caught the suspect in a nearby parking lot.

King was being held Thursday in County Jail on $50,000 bail. As he was being booked, it was discovered that there were outstanding warrants for his arrest on suspicion of grand theft, petty theft and battery, Gustafson said.
