GOLF : Rams’ Eric Dickerson Discovers That Big Names Just Say No to His Celebrity Golf Tournament

A snag has developed in the first Eric Dickerson “Just Say No To Drugs” Celebrity Golf Classic at Encino Golf Course.

There are no celebrities.

“We thought they would be there,” said Al Goldfarb, public relations director for the Department of Recreation and Parks. “Rather than proceeding, we have decided to put it off to a date when more celebrities are available.”

The fund-raising event, scheduled for Saturday, has been put off indefinitely. Eighteen foursomes had been scheduled to compete in the 18-hole, shotgun-start event. Each golfer was to donate $100, which includes green fees, golf cart, buffet lunch and a free raffle. The proceeds were to benefit Dickerson’s Rangers clubs throughout the city.

In lieu of his golf classic, the Los Angeles Rams’ running back will participate in a camping trip Saturday at Chatsworth Park. Dickerson will join more than 300 Rangers in the overnight program starting at 4:30 p.m.

The club offers social, cultural and athletic activities for youths ages 7 to 12. It is in its second year.

If you want to sink a hole-in-one, the par-3 12th hole at Woodley Golf Course is the place to go.

According to course manager George Penn, the 130-yard hole is the easiest on the course and gets aced about once every two weeks.

It was recently conquered by Abe Most of Encino and Ken Hildenbrand of North Hollywood.Most used a 7-iron, Hildenbrand an 8-iron

On Woodley’s 180-yard, 15th hole, Frank Preimesberger of Van Nuys put a 2-iron drive into the cup.

At Roosevelt Golf Course in Griffith Park, Aurelio Reyes of Reseda bagged his first hole-in-one. Hitting into a crosswind, he sank his 6-iron drive on the 145-yard third hole.

Kermit Beaver, 77, has had six holes-in-one, his latest on the 138-yard, ninth hole at Los Feliz Golf Course in Griffith Park.

VALLEY PUBLIC GOLF COURSES

The list of public golf courses in the Valley area drops by one next week when Valencia Country Club becomes private. Green fees for 18 holes range from $7 to $10 on weekdays and $10 to $15 on weekends. Nine-hole courses cost from $2.50 to $5 on weekdays and $3 and $8 on weekends. Listed are the Valley-area’s 19 public courses. Prices are effective July 1.
