“NEW YORK COUNTERPOINT.” Richard Stoltzman, clarinet. RCA Red Seal 5944-2-RC (compact disc). Crossover pap is crossover pap, even if Stoltzman lavishes the same impeccable breathing and coloristic devices on Ives as he does on originals by his pianist, Bill Douglas. The eclectic repertory ranges from transcriptions of Perotin to arrangements of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Completing the package is Steve Reich’s “New York Counterpoint,” a 13-minute minimalist essay in overdubbing (a companion to the flute work, “Vermont Counterpoint”) in which Stoltzman performs with, against and over himself. Pleasant, if you don’t have high expectations.
