Local News in Brief : Park Plan Foes Go It Alone

Share

Opponents of a county plan to allow commercial development in Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park have had little success in persuading surrounding cities to join the fight. The Coalition to Preserve Bonelli Park had urged the cities to help in its effort to defeat the plan for a lodge, chalets and a restaurant, but so far only the San Dimas City Council and the Diamond Bar Municipal Advisory Council have voted against the project.

Meanwhile, the Walnut City Council voted last month not to join the opposition; the La Verne council has accepted the plan with some conditions; the Claremont council has refused to take a position, and the Pomona council has delayed taking a stand until it consults with Supervisor Pete Schabarum, the plan’s sponsor.

The county, which last summer scaled down its plan by eliminating an amphitheater, a tramway and stores, estimates that the development will generate $500,000 a year to help offset the $2.4 million required to maintain the park.
