San Diego Sports Et cetera : Perry’s Straight Shooting Leads SDSU

San Diego State forward Chana Perry had been struggling at the free throw line, shooting 55% before Friday’s game against Purdue.

But it was Perry’s eight straight free throws in the final three minutes that helped the Aztecs beat Purdue, 80-74, for third place in the Coors women’s basketball tournament at Boulder, Colo.

Perry, who had 30 points and 16 rebounds, made 10 of 12 shots from the line. SDSU’s Brooke Meadows added 14 points and 9 rebounds. The Aztecs (3-2) were playing without starter Jessica Haynes who aggravated a knee injury Thursday.

Purdue is 3-2.

Niki Bracken scored 24 points and Marcine Edmonds added 23 to pace Cal Poly Pomona to a 68-60 victory over the University San Diego in a nonconference women’s game at the USD Sports Center. Candida Echeverria led USD (1-3) with 16 points.

Vanessa Graham scored 18 points and Darlene Beal had 25 rebounds to lead Howard University to a 64-63 victory over United States International University in the first round of the Diamond women’s tournament at Gary, Ind.

USIU (1-1) didn’t score a field goal for the first eight minutes, and trailed at the half, 35-23. Sonya Carter (26 points, 9 rebounds) and Amanda Spry (11 points and 10 rebounds) helped USIU close the gap in the second half.

Howard (3-2) will play Miami, Fla. in tonight’s final. USIU will play Bradley in the consolation game.

Shannon Anderson scored 17 points and Suzy Jones added 14 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 69-47 victory over Pomona-Pitzer in the first round of the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational tournament at Pomona.

Point Loma Nazarene (3-0) will meet Azusa Pacific in tonight’s championship game. Azusa Pacific beat Lewis and Clark College of Portland in the first round Friday.

Ann Duffy and Shelley Stokes added 10 points apiece for Point Loma Nazarene, which led at halftime, 32-17. Liz Peters led Pomona-Pitzer with 18 points.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Darryl Robinson scored a game-high 22 points including a 12-foot jumper as time ran out to give Redlands a 64-63 victory over UC San Diego in a semifinal game of the University of Redlands tournament at Redlands.

Redlands (4-1) will meet either Menlo College or Cal State San Bernardino in tonight’s final. UCSD (3-2) will play for third place.

UCSD trailed 22-16 at halftime but rallied to take a 63-62 lead on Greg Paskwietz’s three-point shot with four seconds remaining. Redlands called timeout and then passed in bounds to Robinson who drove the length of the court before shooting his game-winner.

Kirk Kramer led UCSD with 12 points and Kevin Stewart added 11.

Christian Heritage College controlled Azusa Pacific’s inside game in the second half to rally for a 76-70 victory in the semifinal round of the Azusa Pacific tournament.

Bill Soucie had 18 points and Mark Kraatz and William Cunningham each added 15 to lead Christian Heritage (3-2). Azusa Pacific (2-5) led at the half, 39-37.

Point Loma Nazarene improved its shooting percentage in the second half to defeat Brigham Young University-Hawaii, 59-52, in the opening round of the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix.

Point Loma, which trailed, 26-19, at the half, shot 28% in the first half but improved to 68% in the second half.

Steve Riddle paced Point Loma (3-3) with 16 points. Point Loma plays Grand Canyon College in today’s 7:30 p.m. championship game.

MEN’S TENNIS

Top-seeded Scott Patridge of the University of San Diego defeated Russell Meyers of San Diego State, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to today’s 11 a.m. final of the San Diego All-College men’s tennis tournament at USD.

In the other semifinal match, third-seeded David Stewart of USD defeated Mark Farren of USD, 6-4, 6-3.
