At least 18 people, most of them Modesto junior high school students, were injured, two of them critically, when two tour buses in which they were riding collided on the San Mateo-Hayward bridge, 20 miles south of San Francisco. The 9.5-mile-long bridge was closed in both directions for several hours following the crash. California Highway Patrol officers said the buses collided after a passenger car stopped suddenly when it had a flat tire. Some students were trapped inside the buses for an hour until emergency crews could free them. The students were returning from a trip to Washington D.C.
