Though both were uncharacteristically streaky, Mats Wilander and Boris Becker advanced to the quarterfinals of the $607,500 Monte Carlo Open.

Top-seeded Wilander ran off four games in a row in each set to beat Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay, 6-4, 6-4, Thursday.

Becker, seeded second, defeated 16th-seeded Jordi Arrese of Spain, 6-1, 6-3, winning the last six games of the match.

In other third-round play, Carl Uwe Steeb of West Germany defeated Paolo Cane of Italy, 6-4, 6-1; 13th-seeded Horst Skoff of Austria ousted Martin Jaite of Argentina, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5); No. 14 Alberto Mancini of Argentina bested Carl Limberger of Australia, 6-1, 6-3; 10th-seeded Ronald Agenor of Haiti eliminated Guy Forget of France, 6-2, 7-5; No. 8 Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina beat ninth-seeded Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), and Jan Gunnasson of Sweden defeated Patrick Kuhnen of West Germany, 7-5, 6-2.

Andrea Temesvari of Hungary, coming back from ankle and shoulder injuries, upset second-seeded Zina Garrison, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, in the second round of Houston’s Virginia Slims tournament.

Top-seeded Chris Evert defeated Kathy Rinaldi, 6-0, 6-3. Kim Kessaris beat Elise Burgin, 7-6, 6-1.
