Notebook : Wammack Courting Another Title

J. P. Wammack of Glendale is a born-again tennis player.

Wammack, 34, won the 30-and-over men’s singles title in the 63rd Los Angeles Public Parks tennis tournament held last weekend at Griffith Park, defeating Brett Dawson of Glendale, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Wammack also teamed with Eagle Rock resident Angel Abreu, 35, to win the 30-and-over doubles competition.

“The 30-and-over division has given new life to my tennis career,” said Wammack, who played at Hoover High, Glendale College and UCLA.

With the victories, Wammack qualifies for the the national public parks championships in Long Beach in August. Last year, Wammack won the national singles tournament in Pasadena.

Wammack will team with Abreu in doubles in Long Beach and also in the grass-court doubles championships in Santa Barbara.

Honor roll: Bill Koury and Mark Whisenant of La Canada High have been named to the All-Southern Section 2-A Division baseball team.

Koury, a senior infielder, batted .521 this season for the Spartans.

Whisenant, a senior pitcher who was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 15th round of the amateur draft, was 9-4 with a 2.31 earned-run average.

More honors: Greg Zaun of St. Francis High and Mickey Moreno of Hoover have been named to the All-Southern Section 5-A baseball second team.

Zaun, a senior catcher, batted .467.

Moreno, a junior infielder, batted .430, and was a third-team pick.

Final football fling: Seventy-two graduating seniors from 24 high schools in Glendale and the San Fernando Valley began workouts last weekend for the first Burbank-Glendale-area all-star football game that will be played Saturday, July 1, at Burroughs High in Burbank.

Glendale workouts are being conducted at Hoover and Marshall highs.

Ken Gerard of Marshall heads the Glendale-area coaching staff, which also includes Dennis Hughes (Hoover) and Charley Mack (Verdugo Hills).

Glendale-area offensive players include: Quarterbacks--Rick Callister (Glendale), Sid Oxford (Marshall) and Steve Solano (Hoover). Running backs--Tony Gibson (Marshall), Rafik Thorossian (Glendale), John Whitlock (Crescenta Valley) and Bob Yerby (Verdugo Hills). Wide receivers--Greg Lloyd (Village Christian), Lucio Solano (Franklin) and Mike Rotondi (Hoover). Tackles--David Bartl (Crescenta Valley), Cesar Chaparro (Pater Noster), Art Contreras (Franklin) and George Watson (Marshall). Guards--Gabriel Lopez (Franklin), Leon Panduro (Crescenta Valley) and Bill Stewart (La Canada). Centers--Greg Demmert (Hoover) and Joe Graciano (Glendale). Tight ends--Kevin Eberhoch (Village Christian) and Greg Thompson (La Canada). Kicker--Brad Faunce (Hoover).

Glendale-area defensive players include: Linemen--Robert Bustamante (St. Francis), David Jackson (Franklin), Robert Marceau (Hoover) and Kevin Shaffer (Verdugo Hills). Linebackers--Jeff Dyrek (St. Francis), John Garrett (Glendale), Rommell Hingco (Eagle Rock), Paul Koons (Verdugo Hills), Eddie Piromsuk (Village Christian), Paul Wiley (Crescenta Valley). Backs--Manny Bravo (St. Francis), Jesus Plascencia (Marshall), Tony Polino (Glendale) and Jerry Razo (Pater Noster).
