Sockers Sign Defender Cacho

Cacho, a defender known for consistency and hard work, said Tuesday he has signed a one-year contract to play a second season with the Sockers, who now have signed nine players from last year’s championship team.

The first thing he says when asked about returning is apologize.

“I’m sorry for my English,” said Cacho, a native of Argentina. “My wife tells me all the time: ‘Cacho, go to the school or some place where they teach a little English.’ I usually tell her: ‘Yes, yes, yes, I go.’ But I never go.”

Cacho, 30, says he signed the contract in July. He will be playing his fifth season in the Major Indoor Soccer League, after starting with the Lazers and playing two years with the Kansas City Comets. But it is in San Diego where he and his family are most happy.

“I (asked my family) if they want to stay here or they want to leave, and my family tell me: ‘Cacho, we want to stay here because we like it.’ I say ‘OK. Don’t talk with anybody (else). Just talk with the Sockers and sign.’ ”

Cacho, who had 19 points and 20 blocks in 42 games last season, is comfortable with the Sockers’ style.

“I feel good on this team,” he said. “Kansas City you play a hundred miles per hour, all the time fast. Here, when we have to play a hundred miles per hour, we play. When we have to stop the ball, we stop the ball and touch and move.”
