Belgium was hoping to clinch a spot in its third consecutive World Cup finals later today in its Group 7 game at home against lowly Luxembourg. The Belgians needed a victory or a tie against Luxembourg.

In other qualifying games today, Turkey kept alive its chances of advancing to the finals for the first time since 1954 by winning 3-0 at home against Austria in a Group 3 encounter, and Czechoslovakia defeated Switzerland 3-0 in Prague in a Group 7 contest to improve its chances of qualifying for the finals.
