TENNIS ROUNDUP : Cash Eliminates Chang in Tokyo

Australia’s Pat Cash, in a potential preview of a Davis Cup finals matchup, eliminated seventh-seeded Michael Chang Tuesday in the second round of the $1-million Seiko tennis tournament at Tokyo.

Other seeded players upset were No. 4 Andres Gomez and No. 5 Aaron Krickstein.

Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion who is trying to rebound from an injury-filled 1989 season, beat Chang, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Chang recently led the U.S. team to the Davis Cup finals by defeating Horst Skoff of Austria in the decisive match of semifinal competition. Cash led the Australians over Argentina in the Davis Cup semifinals.

In the third set Tuesday, Cash broke Chang’s service in the seventh game and later closed out the match by winning his own serve at love.

Thomas Hogstedt, a qualifier, defeated Gomez, 6-4, 6-4, and Scott Davis beat Krickstein, 6-3, 6-1.

Gomez made 38 unforced errors and put in only 49% of his first serves. Hogstedt stayed in control, getting in 64% of his first serves.

Davis need only 55 minutes to beat Krickstein, using 11 aces and putting in nearly 73% of his first serves.

In other second-round matches, No. 9 Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland beat Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, and No. 10 Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union beat qualifier Rick Leach, 6-1, 6-4.

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg, No. 2 Boris Becker and No. 3 Ivan Lendl had byes.

Czechoslovakia’s Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova easily advanced in the first round of the European Indoor tournament at Zurich, Switzerland.

Novotna, seeded fourth, beat Britain’s Jo Durie, 6-4, 6-0; and Sukova, seeded fifth, needed only 47 minutes to beat Italy’s Linda Ferrando, 6-2, 6-2. In the U.S. Open, Ferrando had pulled one of the biggest upsets of the year when she eliminated Monica Seles.

Nathalie Tauziat, seeded seventh, of France, overcame a slow start in defeating Rachel McQuillan of Australia, 6-7 (7-5), 6-2, 6-1.

In other first-round matches, Mercedes Paz of Argentina defeated Julie Halard of France, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6); Austria’s Judith Wiesner defeated, Cathy Caverzasio of Italy, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Dinky van Rensburg of South Africa downed Nathalie Herreman of France, 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 6-4.

Top-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union defeated Nicolas Pereira of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round of a tournament in Ramat Hasharon, Israel.

Jimmy Connors underwent surgery on his left wrist in a 1-hour, 45-minute operation at Santa Barbara.

Richard Scheinberg, the orthopedic surgeon who performed the operation, said that Connors, 38, would be in a cast for six weeks and that he should not play before the middle or end of January.

Connors injured his wrist in a first-round match in Milan, Italy, in February and had been sidelined much of the year.
