COLLEGE BASKETBALL PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Arizona Repels Washington State, 84-71

Matt Othick scored 18 points, including six free throws in the final 1:10 and sixth-ranked Arizona regained sole possession of first place with an 84-71 victory over Washington State Thursday night at Tucson.

Arizona (17-3, 6-2) led by 15 points in the first half, was ahead, 37-25, at halftime and led, 52-36, midway through the second half.

But the Cougars (12-6, 4-4) made eight three-pointers in the second half--three each from Reco Rowe and Tyrone Maxey--to make a run at Arizona, which won its 57th consecutive home game--longest streak in the nation.

Neil Derrick’s layup with 2:17 remaining pulled Washington State to within 72-68, but that was as close as the Cougars got.

Chris Mills had 21 points and 11 rebounds for Arizona, and Sean Rooks added 17 points.

Bennie Seltzer scored 15 points for Washington State.

Arizona State 53, Washington 41--Isaac Austin scored 12 of his 14 points in the last 16 1/2 minutes and the Wildcats overcame a cold first half to beat the Huskies at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils (13-5, 4-4) made seven of 24 shots (29%) in the first half, yet had a 20-19 at halftime on Lynn Collins’ two free throws with two seconds left.

Austin’s jumper capped an 8-2 spurt to open the second half and he had a layup and free throw in an 11-1 spurt as Arizona State built a 39-24 lead with 8:45 left.

Washington (12-6, 3-5) could only get as close as 48-39 on Tim Caviezel’s three-pointer with 2:21 remaining.

Doug Meekins scored 14 points for Washington, which committed 26 turnovers.

Stanford 86, Oregon 75--Deshon Wingate scored 23 points and the Cardinal overpowered the Ducks in the second half at Palo Alto.

Stanford (11-8, 4-5) used a 14-4 spurt at the start of the second half to take a 45-39 lead. Wingate scored 10 of the Cardinal’s first 16 points in the second half.

After Stanford opened a 74-61 lead with four minutes left, the Ducks (8-10, 3-5) closed to within six points in the final minute.

Kenny Ammann hit five free throws down the stretch for the Cardinal.

Kevin Mixon scored 27 points and Terrell Brandon added 21 for Oregon.

Adam Keefe had 22 points and 14 rebounds for Stanford, and Jim Morgan added 13 points.

California 83, Oregon State 76--Roy Fisher had 21 points, nine rebounds and eight assists at Berkeley as the Bears knocked the Beavers out of a first-place tie.

Mario Jackson had 20 points for Oregon State (11-7, 5-3). Billy Dreher added 21 for Cal (9-9, 5-4).
