Arbitration hearings were avoided by signings that included third baseman Kelly Gruber by the Toronto Blue Jays for $11 million for three years and first baseman Glenn Davis by the Baltimore Orioles for a club-record $3,275,000 for 1991. The signings of Gruber and Davis bring the list of players making $3 million or more to 36.

Other signings: Shortstop Walt Weiss by the Oakland A’s for a year at $780,000, outfielder Chris James by the Cleveland Indians for a year at $1,367,500, first baseman Rafael Palmeiro by the Texas Rangers for a year at $1,475,000 and infielder Jose Oquendo by the St. Louis Cardinals, a four-year contract extension for $8.5 million.
