BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Katella Scores Four in Seventh to Knock Off El Dorado, 4-2

Katella scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to defeat El Dorado, 4-2, in an Empire League baseball game Thursday.

In the seventh, Chris Reed reached base on an error and scored on Matt Stockstill’s ground-rule double off El Dorado starter Shawn Holcomb.

Erik Cortez then singled off reliever Brett Tomko to score Stockstill with the tying run. Frank Montalvo followed with a double to score Cortez and Dax Dowling hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Montalvo.

Stockstill had two hits and scored for Katella (15-10, 10-5 in league). El Dorado is 19-6, 12-3.

In other Empire League games:

Esperanza 14, Los Alamitos 7--Rich Hills hit two-run home runs in the second and third innings, added a single and drove in six for Esperanza, which won its second consecutive league title. The Aztecs (23-2, 13-2), ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, led off the game with six consecutive singles in an eight-run first inning.

Loara 10, Cypress 5--Two Cypress pitchers walked 14 batters and Cypress fielders committed six errors. Loara drew eight walks and scored seven runs in the first inning.

In the South Coast League:

Irvine 2, Mission Viejo 1--Mike Seal (7-2) struck out 11 in a three-hitter for host Irvine (15-10-1, 7-7-1), which moved into a tie for third place with Capistrano Valley. Irvine and Capistrano Valley will meet in a playoff game to determine the league’s third representative in postseason play. Dana Hills 5, Capistrano Valley 2--Dana Hills scored three runs in the top of the seventh after Capistrano Valley (14-10-1, 7-7-1) tied the score on a two-run double by Chris Adams in the sixth inning.

El Toro 7, San Clemente 1--Sophomore right-hander Mark Verwayne (8-2) pitched a four-hitter, striking out four, and walking one for El Toro (15-11, 9-6), which took second place. Catcher Chad Hoelker had two hits, a stolen base and a run; Chris Wiggins had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice; Jason Santoro had two hits and two runs batted in and Brian Haas had two hits and one RBI for El Toro. In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 3, Bolsa Grande 0--Mike Kissell (7-2) pitched five innings, allowing just one hit, for the victory for league champion Santiago (20-6, 13-1). La Quinta 8, Los Amigos 3--Walter Dawkins had two home runs, his seventh and eighth of the season, for La Quinta (20-7, 10-4).

Pacifica 9, Rancho Alamitos 4--Mark Wolfson and Dave Aldapa each had two hits and two RBIs and Eric Stevens had two hits and scored twice for Pacifica (13-13, 7-7).

Kennedy 7, Garden Grove 2 (10 innings)--Kennedy (14-12, 6-8) scored five runs in the top of the 10th inning, highlighted by Shawn Goldsberry’s two-run single. Goldsberry had four RBIs, and Brian Faddoul (4-3) pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run.
