Super May Scores Victory in Johnny’s Image ‘Cap
Jack Kent Cooke’s Super May finally reached the winner’s circle in his fourth stakes race of the meeting by winning the $62,000 Johnny’s Image Handicap on the turf by 2 1/4 lengths Friday night at Hollywood Park.
The five-year old son of Super Concorde, ridden by leading jockey Gary Stevens, raced the 1 1/16 miles on the grass in 1:39 3/5, only three-fifths of a second off the track record. Early pacesetter Twilight Agenda held on for second, with Laxey Bay third in the field of eight older horses.
The winner, trained by Richard Mandella, carried top weight of 121 pounds in scoring his eighth victory. The $35,000 winner’s share increased Super May’s earnings to $412,335.
