BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Valenzuela to Undergo Another Test
Pitcher Fernando Valenzuela will undergo another test today to determine whether medication has eased a blood-flow problem to his heart.
Valenzuela will have a treadmill stress test and will be re-examined by Larry Santora. Santora last Wednesday found “crimping” in an artery leading to Valenzuela’s heart, which explained unusual results in previous tests on the 30-year-old pitcher. Santora said the condition isn’t dangerous and could be treated without surgery. Valenzuela, 0-2 with a 12.15 ERA in two starts, was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 13.
Catcher Ron Tingley was released from a hospital after spending Monday night under observation for a possible head injury. Tingley was hit on the helmet by Bill Pecota’s bat in the first inning Monday. . . . Catcher Lance Parrish was activated off the disabled list and center fielder Junior Felix was placed on the DL retroactive to last Thursday.
Initial research by the Angels shows that Dave Winfield might be the oldest player to have hit for the cycle. Winfield was 39 years 8 months 21 days old when he accomplished that feat on Monday. Milwaukee’s Paul Molitor and San Francisco’s Robby Thompson also hit for the cycle this season.
