ROUNDUP : Loyola Marymount Baseball Team Splits WCC Doubleheader on Road

The Loyola Marymount baseball team split a West Coast Conference doubleheader with Santa Clara on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, winning the opener, 16-8, but losing the nightcap, 8-4.

In the first game, the Lions took a 5-0 lead in the second inning. After Loyola (10-20, 5-8 in WCC play) scored its first run, it loaded the bases for shortstop Greg Carl, who hit his first homer of the year.

Carl went two for five in the game with five runs batted in and three runs scored. Mike Seal went three for four with three RBI, including a solo home run in the third.

The winning pitcher was Bob Noson, who went the distance to improve to 2-2.

After the Lions took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the second game, Santa Clara (11-21, 6-8) rallied to take a 4-3 lead.

The Broncos scored two runs in the second and third innings to knock out Loyola starter R.J. Kirkland (1-3). Santa Clara was led by Randy Ortega, who went three for four with two RBIs. He also scored a run.

Carl went two for four with an RBI and a run scored for the Lions. Matt Marks had two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.

The Broncos’ Ryan Brust (2-4) pitched seven innings, allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked two to earn the victory. Dan Carroll got first save.

Loyola plays at Fresno State on Tuesday.

Jessica Reifer scored two goals to lead a team of Ocean and Pioneer League all-stars to a 4-0 victory over a team of Bay League, Chadwick, Bishop Montgomery and El Segundo high all-stars in the South Bay Soccer Classic on Saturday night at South Torrance High.

Reifer, who attends Torrance High, was named the Southern Section 3-A Division player of the year.
