BETTING : Two Hit It Big in National Pick 7

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

After Arcangues, a little-known French-bred and the longest shot on the board won the Breeders’ Cup Classic, two tickets remained with the winning combination in the National Pick 7.

The ticket purchased at Santa Anita was worth $1,598,310.80. The second ticket, purchased at Remington Park in Oklahoma, was worth $1,499.916.30, because of different state take-outs.

Tickets with six winners were worth $510.80. There were 685 of them at Santa Anita.

The national pool on the Pick 7 was close to last year’s total for the exotic bet, when four winning tickets each paid approximately $750,000.

Only $1.8 million was wagered on the national trifecta on the Classic. But only half the country, excluding New York, could bet into the national pool. Bettors who picked the longshot with the favored entry and Kissin Kris were rewarded with $1,936.20 for a $1 bet. A total of 163 winning tickets were sold at the track.

A crowd of 55,130 at Santa Anita wagered $15,006,557. Satellite locations throughout the state added another $7,809,224 to the pool. The money wagered at tracks outside California that co-mingle also is added to the pool for a total of $36,258,799.

This was a North American record, beating the previous record of $28,534,599 set at Churchill Downs on the 1993 Kentucky Derby.

As always there were disparities between prices at Santa Anita and New York in races in which there were separate mutuel pools.

A $2 win bet on Arcangues paid $269.20 at Santa Anita and $209.20 in New York. Sprint winner Cardmania, who paid $12.60 at Santa Anita, paid $15 in New York. Juvenile winner Brocco paid $10 in New York and only $8 at Santa Anita. Kotashaan, winner of the Turf, paid $5.00 at Santa Anita and $6.40 in New York.
