21st Annual Student Academy Awards Winners

Two students from Cal Arts in Valencia are among winners in the 21st annual Student Academy Award competition presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In the animation category, Vanessa Stella Schwartz of Cal Arts won the gold medal for “The Janitor,” and in the documentary category, Cal Arts’ Craig McTurk won a bronze medal for “Street Songs: Pittsburgh Street Singer Bill Borsey.”

The gold medal for dramatic film went to Gary Nadeau of New York University for his movie “Red,” a 24-minute film about an elderly man who is visited by three mysterious youngsters on bicycles. The silver went to Matt Danciger of Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design for “Outside,” and the bronze went to Stephen James of Columbia University for “The Make.”

In the documentary category, Casey G. Williams of the University of Utah won a gold medal for “Genbaku Shi: Killed by the Atomic Bomb” and the silver medal was awarded to Robin Hessman of Brown University in Providence, R.I., and James Longley of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., for their film “Portrait of Boy With Dog.”

In one other animation award, Brian P. Dowrick of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia won a silver medal for “Foodchain.”

Awards will be presented June 12 at academy headquarters in Beverly Hills.
