SAN CLEMENTE : 991 Pounds of Pot Seized at Checkpoint
U.S. Border Patrol agents seized 991 pounds of marijuana from a 29-year-old San Diego motorist at the checkpoint near San Clemente, agency officials said Thursday.
Agents found 780 pounds inside a large metal box behind the paneling of the man’s van, Border Patrol spokeswoman Ann Summers said.
A drug-sniffing dog uncovered 211 more pounds elsewhere in the van. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $793,000, Summers said.
The seizure was made at about 6 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect, whose name was not released pending further investigation, is a legal resident in the country, Summers said. He and his van were turned over to the North County unit of the San Diego Integrated Narcotics Task Force.
