Mater Dei Catcher Treanor Signs With Royals
Matt Treanor, a catcher from Mater Dei High School, opened a bank account Monday, two days after he signed with the Kansas City Royals.
“I didn’t have much money before, but I expect it will be coming in now,” Treanor said.
Treanor was a fourth-round selection Thursday in baseball’s amateur draft. He becomes the first Mater Dei player to sign directly out of high school since Bob Ickes became coach 20 years ago.
“I was a little worried that the scouts might shy away from me because of that,” Treanor said. “I thought they might not draft me very high.”
Treanor, who said he signed for a little less than $100,000, hit .368 with three home runs and 23 runs batted in. He has been assigned to the Royals’ rookie league team in Ft. Myers, Fla.
