LOS ALAMITOS : Success on Arabians Making Lambert Forget the Gold Cup

Jockey Jerry Lambert and Arabians continue to be a successful combination at Los Alamitos.

Rejuvenated at 53, Lambert has 15 victories during the current meeting on Arabians, having added to his total last week with victories aboard T C Tomtyr A on Saturday and Seyvilla Tribaske the night before.

Favored against a field that included Magna Terra Smokey, who has 35 victories in 79 starts, T C Tomtyr A, who is trained by Yancey Carter Jr., won for the 17th time in 26 outings. And it was his second consecutive victory over Magna Terra Smokey.

Carter also trains Seyvilla Tribaske, a 3-year-old filly who followed up an 11-length maiden victory with an 11 1/2-length triumph over allowance rivals last Friday.

She paid $2.80 as the favorite, covered the six furlongs in 1:23 1/5 and has to be considered one of the choices for the $175,000 Daughters of the Desert Futurity on Oct. 29.

If Seyvilla Tribaske wins that race, the victory would be more lucrative for Lambert than any of his three in a row aboard Native Diver in the Hollywood Gold Cup from 1965-67. The purse for the Gold Cup in those days was only $162,100.

A total of 16 trials for the $2-million All-American Futurity, which will be run Sept. 5 at Ruidoso Downs, were held last Friday at the New Mexico track.

Major Rime, who is undefeated, posted the fastest qualifying time, running the 440 yards in 21.395 seconds.

The Fling King, the fastest qualifier for Los Alamitos’ Kindergarten Futurity, won his trial heat and his time of 21.610 seconds was the seventh-fastest. He was ridden by Henry Garcia for owners Dutch Masters III.

In his trial, The Fling King defeated San Mateo Handicap winner Check This Reb, who wound up qualifying for the All-American consolation. First Down Hussey, who has also competed locally, was another consolation qualifier.

The All-American Futurity, which will be simulcast at Los Alamitos, was won by California-based A Classic Dash in 1993. A Classic Dash was ridden by Eddie Garcia for trainer Connie Hall.

The first of two days of trials for the Sam Houston Futurity will be held today at Sam Houston Park in Texas.

The five fastest qualifiers today and Thursday will advance to the finals and the sixth- through 10th-fastest times will move to the Futurity consolation.

Contested at 400 yards, the Sam Houston Futurity has an estimated purse of $500,000 and will be run on Sept. 5.

Running 870 yards for the first time in his career last Friday night, Really A Secret responded with the fastest qualifying time for the $62,000 Gold Rush Derby on Sept. 3.

In winning the second of two trials, Really A Secret ran the distance in 45.87 seconds, ending a five-race losing streak and winning for only the second time in 16 starts. He paid $12.20 and beat Oh Oh The Signature by a half-length.

Oh Oh The Signature wound up being the second-fastest qualifier, then came Foggy Meadow, who won the other trial in 45:96 seconds, Citation Five, Skippa Dashing Star, Chicks Response, Tis A Little Dol and L.C. Tern.

Foggy Meadow, a 9-2 shot, avenged consecutive losses to Citation Five in their trial, upsetting the 1-5 favorite under jockey John Creager.

Getting away from Down With Debt, who upset Refrigerator in the recent Go Man Go Handicap, Stick N Picky scored an easy victory in the $20,000 Bobby Doyle Memorial Handicap on Saturday.

Seventh behind Down With Debt in the Las Damas Handicap in her most recent start, the 6-1 Sticky N Picky scored a 1 1/4-length victory over favored Be Real Now in the Doyle.

Trained by Bob Gilbert and ridden by Steve Treasure, Sticky N Picky has won six of 14.

Be Real Now, who had a rough trip when fourth in the Las Damas, was fractious in the gate, then stumbled at the start and did well to beat Newport Fancy by a neck for second.

Creager, third in the all-time jockey standings at Los Alamitos, is approaching 1,800 victories there.

A victory aboard Petite Azure in Sunday’s fourth race left Creager, 43, with 1,792. He trails only the retired Danny Cardoza, who won 2,513, and Kenneth Hart, who is at 2,196. Currently riding at Ruidoso Downs, Hart, 46, is expected to return to Los Alamitos after Labor Day.
