UCI’s Simmons, Miglinieks Receive Big West Honors
UC Irvine’s Kevin Simmons was named Big West freshman of the year Wednesday and Anteater point guard Raimonds Miglinieks was an All-Big West first-team selection. Utah State center Eric Franson was named player of the year.
Simmons led the Anteaters in scoring (14.8 points a game) and rebounding (7.5). Miglinieks ranks third in the nation with an average of 8.2 assists.
Long Beach State center Joe McNaull also was a first-team pick. Cal State Fullerton center Winston Peterson and Long Beach’s Terrance O’Kelley were second-team selections. Simmons and the 49ers’ Rasul Salahuddin were honorable-mention picks.
Simmons, Irvine’s Brian Keefe and Fullerton’s Chris Dade were named to the all-freshman team.
